Guarnaschelli was the daughter of Maria Guarnaschelli, and John Guarnaschelli. In the year 1991, she graduated from Barnard College with an art historian degree. She worked at the American Place restaurant for one year , earning an hourly wage of minimum from the year 1991 through 1991. Guarnaschelli's experience in the kitchen began after watching her mother test numerous recipes at home while editing cookbooks. Guarnaschelli was a chef under Larry Forgione (whose son is Iron Chef Marc Forgione), and after that, at numerous eateries in France, New York and Los Angeles, including Guy Savoy's La Butte Chaillot. Prior to being hired by Butter as the executive chef, Guarnaschelli was employed for Daniel Boulud at his eponymous restaurant. Before it closed, she served as executive chef of The Darby. She serves as chairperson of the Food Museum's Culinary Council. Guarnaschelli released her first cookbook in the year 2013. "Old-School Comfort Food A Memoir of the Way I Learned to cook" includes autobiographical information and the most loved recipes from her professional experience that she made for the home.
